The rose that grew from concrete is my all-time favorite
saying. I believe that it not only perfectly describes how I feel my story is,
but it also describes how so many of us are as well.
Most of us know that roses don’t normally grow from
concrete. Roses, like most plants; need soil, sunlight and to be planted in a
good foundation. That’s what makes it so unique when you see a plant sprouting in
a place that it shouldn’t be growing.
Have you ever tried to pull a flower up that shouldn’t be
growing somewhere? It takes serious work. You will notice that the foundation
and the roots tend to be deeper and harder to pull up once the flower decides
to bloom anyway.
Sometimes that’s us. Life can put us in some tricky situations
and people who see us can already declare what they think our future will be.
“Your soil isn’t right”, “You can’t push through that”, “There isn’t any way
that’s going to work.” There will always be someone who can look at what
you have been through and tell you how impossible it will be for you to bloom.

I first heard this quote from a poetry book by
the same title written by Tupac, in it he says:
Have you heard about the rose
the grew from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk without having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.”

Many people won’t care about you until you bloom. That’s not
negative, it’s just real. This isn’t to say that you won’t have people around
you who see something in you before you do. You will have those people (and you
should hold on to them) but others often see what is placed against us and
define our future with that.
When I look at my life, I would never think that I would be thirty, divorced, and with no kids. This is far different than what I had
planned for my life. But that doesn’t mean I can’t bloom, in fact it’s exactly
why I can. It doesn’t mean that I can’t push through the concrete and be who
God called me to be, the same goes for you.
You must embody real strength to push through concrete. It
isn’t pretty. It may take you longer than most. While everyone looks like they
are blooming and beautiful you are still trying to breakthrough the surface.
Many people will count you out along way, keep pushing.
When you finally bloom you will be just as beautiful as any
rose, but your petals and roots will be so much stronger, and nothing will be
able to take you out. If you are trying to breakthrough keep your endurance and
if your already bloomed remember that the concrete in your life will allow you
to be able to weather any storm.
